Karen Moriarty's paintings reveal influences as varied as Bonnard and Frankenthaler. She paints from the landscape--of the earth, the human body, a plate of oranges. Her oils contrast delicate washes with thicker impasto strokes.
Moriarty majored in painting at the Fort Wayne Art Institute, then lived in San Francisco for several years. She later studied at Indiana University with Audrey Ushenko and John Hrehov, among others. She maintains a summer studio/gallery in downtown Fort Wayne at 123 West Columbia Street and her work shows in museums, galleries, group and solo shows throughout the country.
“The color, the movement and light of the natural world— what I hope people see in my work is the earthly beauty that surrounds us. And also the paint, the pure beauty of paint, smearing, splashing, dripping. I like to leave evidence of the behavior of the paint itself. I will scrub it on with a brush or knife, scratch it back off. I want to see remnants of the process. Recently, I have been pouring and dripping paint onto the canvas. Paint is the most sensuous medium for me.”
“Moriarty stands out as an inner directed, Zen-like chronicler of the outdoors…”
