karen9@gmail.com KAREN MORIARTY Karen Moriarty's paintings are exhibited in Fort Wayne and Valporaiso IN and Evanston IL. Recently influenced by Larry Rivers, Helen Frankenthaler and Cezanne, she evolves, splattering and pouring paint onto delicately stained canvases. Primarily an oil painter, she has started gluing objects onto some works and experimenting with abstraction. "I am wanting to incorporate more drawing into the work...getting very interested in an unfinished look (think Larry Rivers)...I love the tension between pencil drawing and paint that allows the eye to complete unfinished areas - like a page from a child's coloring book..." Classicly trained, Moriarty majored in painting early at Fort Wayne Art Institute, lived in San Francisco for a time and later worked in print, television, interior design and all things visual. Later returning to study at Indiana University she “loosened up to use a brush again” studying with Audrey Ushenko and John Hrehov. She presently paints in a studio at Lotus Gallery. A small portion of her work is commissioned portraits of people, homes and gardens.
